Levels is a suburb of Christchurch located in the Canterbury Region on the South Island of New Zealand. It is a generally quiet and peaceful place, but the locals here are known for their friendly, laid-back attitude.
The Port Hills have some of the best walking trails in Canterbury, and it’s also an excellent spot for a first date. The summit of Mount Cavendish offers some breathtaking views of the city and of the Southern Alps. From there, you can take the Rapaki Track, which is a rugged, 4-kilometre (2.5-mile) trail that follows a ridge line, or you can take the alternative Halswell Quarry Track, which is a gentler 5-kilometre (3-mile) descent with great views of the quay.
If spending time outdoors is not your thing, then maybe you and your date could grab a coffee somewhere. There are plenty of cool coffee shops in Levels, like the Arborist Coffee House or the Little High Eatery. Both serve great coffee, and their outdoor seating areas are the perfect spot for a relaxed first date.
If you’re looking for something a bit more interesting than a cup of coffee, then why not visit one of the many galleries, museums and exhibitions in Levels? The International Antarctic Centre is a great place to learn about Antarctica and the unique wildlife that lives there, while the Canterbury Museum is host to a variety of historical artefacts and rotating exhibitions. The Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu is also well worth a visit, with its impressive collection of New Zealand and international art.
If you’re looking for something a bit livelier, then Levels has some great options for live music and entertainment. The Wunderbar is a popular live music venue and always has something going on, from chill acoustic music to full-on rock concerts. For something more low-key, there’s Time Ball, which is a small bar and music venue that hosts regular jazz sessions, DJs and open mic nights.
For a more classic first date, there’s plenty of great pubs, bars and restaurants to choose from in Levels. The Village Bar & Grill is a popular spot, offering delicious pub-style meals and local craft beer. There’s also The Penny Royal, which has an extensive selection of beer, wine and spirits, as well as wood-fired pizzas and snacks. And if you’re looking for something a bit more upscale, then the Gainsborough Lodge offers classic New Zealand cuisine and an extensive wine list.
If you’re looking for something a bit different, then why not take your date to see a movie at the Reading Cinemas, or visit the AMI Stadium for a guided tour of the facilities or to see a rugby match. You could also head to the Ferrymead Historic Park for a walk around the old village and a tour of the restored tram, or take a kayak tour along the Avon River. There are also plenty of great options for cycling and mountain biking in the Port Hills, including the Sign of the Takahe, which is one of the most popular trails.
